21 YEARS: Making Histories with South African Fashion Week @ Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town

Last night, I had the chance to be invited to the opening night of the exhibition 21 YEARS: Making Histories with South African Fashion Week @ Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town. I was thrilled as it is the first ever fashion exhibition in a South African museum. Fashion is finally entering the institution. This first event, which for sure will be followed by several others, marks the beginning of an exciting journey. South African and more largely, African fashion will finally be historized and historicized, collected and archived, studied and exhibited. As Erica de Greef, curator of the exhibition, expressed…

Culture Memories: a year in South Africa

Here we are! Last weekend, I celebrated my one year anniversary in Cape Town, South Africa. As I prepare my departure in a little bit more than a month from now, I am remembering all the experiences that I have had the chance to live. What will I remember? What store, museum, event, has shaped my stay? and why? Here is a few notes I am going to take back with me and that I am happy to share with you. The intensity of District 6 Museum District 6 Museum is my favorite museum in Cape Town. It tells the…

When nature is the museum

I have been living in Cape Town, South Africa, for almost a year now. Compared to European capitals which I was used to, the city does not have a big museum offer. It has some great museums, District 6 or Zeitz Mocaa being among them, but it is quite light (quantity-wise). Moreover, the museums are never very busy – except for tourists. It is a shame. Even though it is light in terms of quantity, the museum offer is of good quality, content and design wise. So I have wondered. Why do so few locals go to museums? It is…

South African National Gallery @ Iziko Museum, Cape Town.

Happy New Year Year everyone! Starting this new year with a post about a museum. I’ve been in┬áCape Town for three months but realised haven’t been writing much about the local museum offer. I visited the South African National Gallery at the end of last year, and really liked it. Thought it was worth sharing. The South African National Gallery is in the Company Gardens in the heart of Cape Town. In contrary to a lot of museums I have been to, there is no permanent gallery. The building is divided into six spaces, each being an autonomous temporary exhibition….

The exhibitions that have mattered

I am passionate about exhibitions. Like anything else, it started with exhibitions I have seen and have been amazed, impressed or touched by. In an exhibition, all my senses are awake. It touches me in every way. My appetite for knowledge and responsiveness to academia are stimulated, my fascination and sensibility for (spatial) design are encountered, my eagerness for interaction and participation (my research for fun) is somehow satisfied, and exhibitions are a way of living my passion for fashion, art and history. Going forward in my career, learning more and more about exhibition-making and curation, I have recently been…
